OMH Bids Farwell to One of First Employees
OKMULGEE, Okla. – Delores Tarkington, RN, is retiring from OMH after working at the hospital for 43 years. Her last day at the hospital is Aug. 27, 2010, at which time the hospital will have a party in her honor from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Tarkington began her career as a nurse on Aug. 9, 1967, at the old Okmulgee City Hospital, and transferred to the newly built Okmulgee Memorial Hospital when it opened in October of that same year.
“Mrs. Tarkington has been a part of this hospital since its beginning, she has made a mark not only on her patients, but also everyone who had the opportunity to work with her, and we’re truly going to miss her,” Rex Jones said.
Tarkington began her career as a nursing assistant, then advanced to a ward clerk. After several years as a ward clerk, Tarkington decided to pursue her Licensed Professional Nurse certification, and entered and completed the first LPN class offered by OSU Institute of Technology. She went on to obtain her RN and eventually her Master’s in Nursing. Tarkington also has a certification in utilization review. She is currently the case manager for the medical surgical unit of the hospital, and attends to and sees patients regularly.
Tarkington said she will miss working at the hospital, especially caring for her patients, but she’s ready for retirement.
“This place is like a second-home and the people here are like my extended family, which is why it’s so hard to say goodbye, but at the same time I’m ready to go. I’m so excited about retirement; I’ve been waiting for a long time now,” Tarkington said.
Tarkington said she plans on spending her retirement caring for her family and relaxing.
“I’m very happy for my mom, she truly deserves to retire. I am going to miss working with her, but I’ll still get to see her regularly because she plans on cooking for me every night after she retires, “ said Audrey Alexander, OMH employee and daughter of Delores Tarkington.
