OMH Honors Employee for 30 years of Dedicated Service

OMH Honors Larry MitchellOKMULGEE, Okla. – Okmulgee Memorial Hospital honored Larry Mitchell with a retirement celebration for his 30 years of service to the hospital as a trauma nurse in its emergency room and intensive care unit.

“Larry is such a valued and beloved member of the hospital. We’re truly going to miss him,” said Kathy Machetta, RN, Chief Nursing Officer.

Mitchell’s family and friends were in attendance at the event, and enjoyed cake and punch, which was provided by the hospital. Guests were also regaled with stories of Mitchell’s life and memorable incidents that happened while he was working for the hospital.

“My work as a trauma nurse started on weekends in the hospital’s ER, while I was going to school to receive my nursing degree,” Mitchell said. “I came to the hospital one day to enquire about volunteering in the hospital’s ICU, and instead the hospital offered me a part-time job.”

Mitchell said that one of the most memorable incidents he experienced while working at the hospital was when he helped deliver a baby in the hospital parking lot.

“Sometimes though my job as a trauma nurse could be overwhelming, but I learned to put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Plus I remember more things that make me smile, like the dedication and skill of the hospital staff and the level of care provided to patients, which is the reason I can leave here with no regrets.”

Mitchell said he will miss working at the hospital, but that he has plenty of hobbies and plans to keep himself busy.

“My wife and I have planned a few trips, and I have my hobbies fishing, hunting and pigeon racing to keep me busy,” Mitchell said.

OMH has also named one of its new computer on wheels or COWS after Mitchell, the “bull” is named Larry and will be used by the hospital’s medical staff to record patient information in the electronic patient information documentation system.
